Best Dissertation of 2024 in the PPGPAR/ICB-UFMG program.
The Postgraduate Program in Parasitology (PPGPAR) of the Institute of Biological Sciences at UFMG announced the winner of the award for Best Dissertation defended in 2024, granting the honor to researcher Luiz Gustavo Magalhães Alves.
Under the guidance of Professor Érika Martins Braga, Luiz Gustavo presented the dissertation “Annual Distribution and Richness of Avian Hemoparasites in a Transition Area between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil”. The study stood out for its originality, multidisciplinary approach, and scientific relevance, especially for deepening the knowledge about the occurrence of avian hemoparasites and the factors that shape their distribution in an ecotone of high biodiversity.
During his master's degree, Luiz Gustavo also completed an internship at the Natural History Museum of Paris, with a CAPES-Cofecub scholarship, to develop part of his research. The examining board also highlighted the researcher's academic productivity, which includes co-authoring two published scientific articles and participating in the authorship of a book chapter.
The achievement recognizes not only the excellence of the academic work, but also the significant contribution of the research to the understanding of the interactions between parasites and wild birds, strengthening Brazilian scientific production in the field of Parasitology.
