Who We Are
The Interdisciplinary Malaria Study Group (GIEM) was created with the purpose of studying, through an interdisciplinary approach, the parasitological, immunological, and molecular aspects of different parasites that cause malaria. For over 20 years, we have characterized the immune response in populations exposed to malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. The investigation of the mechanisms involved in the etiology of anemia in P. vivax infections has been a major research theme of our group, engaging researchers from different fields of knowledge. In parallel, our group has been developing studies aimed at the morphological and molecular characterization of malaria parasites and related parasites (Order: Haemosporida) in wild birds and reptiles from different Brazilian ecosystems. Ecological, phylogenetic, and biogeographic studies have been conducted and published in leading journals in the field, earning recognition from both the national and international scientific community. The group has trained numerous undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, and has brought together scientists from Brazil and abroad.
